Fundamentals of Siddha Medicine: Origins and Core Principles
# The Fundamentals of Siddha Medicine Siddha medicine is one of the oldest traditional treatment systems in India, originating in the ancient Tamil Land. Built upon the teachings of the eighteen Siddhars (spiritual sages), this holistic system focuses on balancing the physical body, mind, and spirit to achieve optimal wellness and longevity. ## The Three Humors (Mukkuttram) According to Siddha philosophy, the human body is composed of five elements (earth, water, fire, air, and space). These elements combine to form the three humors: 1. **Vatham (Air & Space):** Governs movement, nervous system, and physical structure. 2. **Pitham (Fire):** Governs metabolism, digestion, body heat, and intellect. 3. **Kabham (Earth & Water):** Governs stability, lubrication, and immunity. A state of health exists when these three humors are in perfect equilibrium (4:2:1 ratio). When this balance is disrupted by improper diet, lifestyle, or environmental factors, disease manifests. ## Diagnostic Methods: The Art of Pulse (Naadi) Siddha practitioners utilize an eight-fold diagnostic methodology (Enn-vagai Thervu), with **Naadi (pulse diagnosis)** being the cornerstone. By assessing the pulse at the wrist, a trained Siddha doctor can detect imbalances in the three humors long before physical symptoms appear. Other diagnostic aspects include examining the tongue, eyes, voice, skin, urine, and stool. ## Treatment Modalities Siddha treatments are highly individualized and encompass: - **Internal Medicines:** Formulations made from herbs, minerals, and metals (like Bhasmas). - **External Therapies:** Massages, herbal steam, Varmam points stimulation, and oil applications. - **Dietary Regimen (Pathiyam):** Food is considered the first line of medicine. Specific foods are restricted or recommended based on the patient's humor imbalance.
